Can Lionel Messi and Company end Argentina’s 23-year trophy drought?

Lionel  Messi and  Argentina will take on host USA in the Copa America Centenario  2016 semi-final on Wednesday morning,June 22. La Albiceleste have not won a trophy since the Copa America in 1993.Gerardo Martino’s team  is desperate to  end their 23-year trophy drought. The men in white and sky blue will be looking to book their place for the third consecutive major tournament finals.

Lionel Messi , the five-time Ballon d’or winner ,who has been time and again been criticized for not replicating his club form in international stage despite taking Argentina to two major tournament finals in the last couple of seasons including the 2014 World Cup Final defeat to Germany, has been on fire in this year’s Copa America. The Argentine magician has scored four goals including an hattrick against Panama and has assisted his teammates three times. USA team coach Jurgen Klinsmann stated ahead of the semifinal that,” It’s now Lionel Messi’s time”. Lionel Messi will also have a chance to become the all-time highest goal scorer for his national side by beating the record set by the Great Gabriel Batistuta(54 goals).

The hosts will miss three regular starters.

Jermaine Jones was red carded against Ecuador and will not play for the rest of the tournament while Bobby Wood and Alejandro Bedoya are serving one match suspension after accumulating yellow cards.
